Steven Sommovigo joined the Shrub Oak team as a special education teacher and shortly thereafter shifted into the position of Transition Coordinator. Working in education for more than a decade, Steven has extensive experience working with students who present with disabilities such as nonverbal learning disability, executive function disorder, and language-based learning disability, including students with autism. Steven is HOUSED in social studies and science, and holds New York State professional teacher certifications including a middle childhood education generalist certification and a students with disabilities generalist certification. In addition, Steven holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and a Master of Science degree in middle childhood education. During his career, Steven also has taken on the role of an outdoor education team member. As a lead team member, Steven was in charge of organizing outdoor experiential excursions, including week-long trips to both Catalina Island, CA and Tampa, FL.
As Transition Coordinator, Steven works closely with Shrub Oak’s students and families to develop postsecondary plans. This includes coordinating on- and off-campus internships as well as life skills/job skills training. Skill development is achieved through both hands-on activities and classroom lessons.
A resident of Shrub Oak, NY, Steven enjoys spending time with his wife and four children, and attending his children’s sporting events. Additionally, Steven enjoys spending as much time as possible outdoors participating in activities such as hiking, fishing, and biking.
