Reimbursement for Private School Education
Your special needs child has the right to a free and appropriate education in accordance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) , enacted in 1975 and amended in 2004. This powerful legislation mandates that each district in the U.S. provide all eligible children with a public education that meets their individual needs. You, as a parent, are entitled to be treated as an equal partner with the school district in deciding on an education plan for your child and his or her individual needs. This enables you to be a powerful advocate for your child. It also means that you must be an informed, active participant in planning and monitoring your child’s unique program and legal rights. Rules and regulations vary by state in the U.S. and internationally. We advise families to seek the advice of counsel or a special needs advocate to learn all of the options for you to consider. Learn more about IDEA legislation here and to find additional information on support for private school placements by your local school district, visit the New York Lawyers for the Public Interest fact sheet for Disability Justice.
Recent changes in U.S. law have made reimbursement possible through medical insurance policies. Differences in benefits vary by state law and the specifics of your insurance coverage. Contact your own insurance advisor for more information, or obtain additional information from SJ Health Insurance Advocates (973-740-0023).
College Savings Plans
At Shrub Oak International School, we provide high quality individualized therapies, education, social, and career development supports, which may be unavailable in school districts. We work collaboratively and in tandem with school districts in a variety of ways, including sharing information on our evidence-based and research-informed programs, which they can incorporate for their own program development and use. Parents and educators are welcome to attend Shrub Oak’s professional development conferences at no fee.
It is our sincere hope that districts will realize the potential benefit of our programs for students with the uniquely challenging and complex educational needs associated with autism. Recognizing that it may sometimes be difficult for students to receive approval for out-of-district services, families often turn to child advocate specialists and child rights law firms for additional assistance and support. Regulations and protocols may vary by state across the U.S. The Council of Parent Attorneys and Advocates maintains a database of firms in various areas and countries, which may be helpful in finding a child advocate.
