On Friday, June 6 we hosted our 2025 prom at Shrub Oak International School, and the entire week leading up to the event was filled with energy, preparation, and joyful anticipation. With a “beachy vibes” theme, staff transformed our courtyard into a coastal-inspired celebration complete with ocean-themed decorations, tropical snacks, beachy props, and festive lights that set the perfect scene for a magical time.
Prom is a significant milestone for many young people, and for our students, it can carry even greater meaning. As a school dedicated to serving autistic individuals, we understand how essential it is to create opportunities for social connection, self-expression, and the celebration of personal achievement. Events like prom create a structured yet flexible space where students can experience the joy of a shared rite of passage in a setting that is supportive, inclusive, and tailored to their individual needs.
All week, excitement built across campus as students prepared for the big event. For many, this meant shopping for dresses, suits, or beach-themed outfits that matched their personality and comfort preferences. Staff supported students in making fashion choices that helped them feel confident and proud. A “Glam Duo” station was set up on campus to help students get ready, with staff offering hairstyling that included inclusive options for all hair types. Manicures and pedicures were offered as well.
Students took an active role in decorating the courtyard for the event, working throughout the week to craft beach-themed banners, string lights, and blow-up colorful beach blowup toys. Staff and students collaborated to prepare snacks and treats that matched the evening’s theme. Every detail reflected the creativity, hard work, and collaborative spirit that make our community so unique.
When the day finally arrived, the courtyard was a magical beach. Music played while students danced, enjoyed the beachy photo booth, and celebrated with their peers and staff. For many students, this was their first prom, and it was clear from the smiles, laughter, and relaxed joy throughout the dance that it was a day worth remembering.
Big moments like prom are important — not only for the memories they create but for the growth they inspire. From choosing an outfit to navigating social dynamics, from sensory planning to self-expression, the process of preparing for and participating in prom offers countless opportunities for students to practice independence, build confidence, and feel part of something bigger than themselves. We are proud to create an environment where each student can experience these milestones in a way that is joyful, affirming, and entirely their own.
