We celebrated the Fourth of July at Shrub Oak International School with a joyful outdoor party that brought together students and staff for a day filled with fun and creativity. Our celebration honored the spirit of the holiday while aligning with our commitment to healthy eating, inclusion, and student participation.
The highlight of the afternoon was our festive barbecue, thoughtfully planned to accommodate our students’ diverse dietary needs. In the days leading up to the event, students actively participated in preparing several items for the menu. Under staff guidance, they baked gluten-free, dairy-free brownies that were rich, fudgy, and a hit with everyone who tried them. Another group prepared a special kosher mac and cheese, ensuring that our celebration included comfort food that was accessible and inclusive. These student-made dishes added a personal touch to the cookout and gave students a meaningful opportunity to practice independence, teamwork, and culinary skills.
Our outdoor space was transformed into a vibrant party setting with red, white, and blue decorations and patriotic-themed snacks that were as nutritious as they were festive. Bowls of fresh blueberries and strawberries were served throughout the event, offering a healthy and refreshing alternative that still captured the colors of the holiday. These thoughtful snack options allowed students to celebrate with food that supported their well-being and dietary goals.
A water slide set up on campus quickly became one of the most popular attractions of the day. Students took turns gliding down the inflatable slide, cooling off and laughing with friends under the summer sun. Around the lawn, other outdoor games and activities encouraged movement, play, and connection. Staff were on hand to support and encourage participation, ensuring that every student felt included and safe while having fun.
The Fourth of July celebration gave us another chance to foster community and reinforce our commitment to student-centered programming. By integrating culinary preparation into the lead-up to the event, we provided meaningful learning experiences beyond the classroom. Students practiced following multi-step instructions, measuring ingredients, and working collaboratively—essential skills that align with our transdisciplinary approach. The outdoor setting offered opportunities for social engagement and sensory exploration, from the texture of water on the slide to the vibrant colors and sounds of the party.
The event also allowed students to express themselves and their creativity. Some chose to help decorate, others assisted with setting up food stations, and many took pride in sharing the treats they helped prepare. The sense of ownership and participation was evident throughout the day, creating a joyful, inclusive atmosphere.
We are grateful to our staff who worked hard to organize the celebration and to our students who helped make it special. Events like this remind us how strong our community is, how much our students can achieve when given the opportunity, and how celebration and learning can go hand in hand. Our Fourth of July barbecue wasn’t just a party—it was a reflection of the values that define life at Shrub Oak International School.
