This week at Shrub Oak International School, we are proudly celebrating Direct Support Professionals Appreciation Week by honoring the dedication, care, and commitment of our DSPs. Each day, our school community is finding ways to express our gratitude to these incredible, compassionate individuals who play such an essential role in the lives of our students. DSPs provide constant support and encouragement, and we wanted to make sure they know just how much they mean to us.
Our students took the lead in creating a beautiful and heartfelt banner that now hangs proudly in the school, serving as a visual reminder of the appreciation we all feel. This project was a collaborative effort that allowed students to express their gratitude through creativity and teamwork. Every brushstroke and written message is filled with meaning, demonstrating how deeply DSPs impact the lives of those they support. Seeing the finished banner has been a moving experience for staff and students alike, and it has quickly become the centerpiece of our celebration.
Throughout the week, we are surprising DSPs with a variety of gestures. We have organized raffles featuring exciting prizes, adding a fun and celebratory element to the week. The raffles have created an atmosphere of anticipation and joy. In addition, we set up a smoothie bar where DSPs can enjoy a refreshing treat, as well as snacks, during their busy day.
Beyond these planned events, we have planned other tokens of recognition throughout the week. Some are surprises, designed to brighten a DSP’s day when least expected. These gestures range from personalized notes of thanks from students to giveaways, all intended to convey how much we value their work. The smiles, laughter, and moments of connection that have come from these surprises highlight just how meaningful it is to take time to celebrate the people who are the foundation of our community.
At Shrub Oak International School, we know that our DSPs are truly the heart of our mission. They provide the daily support that makes it possible for our students to grow, learn, and achieve their goals. DSPs help create an environment where students feel safe, respected, and empowered.
