Recently, Shrub Oak International School took an exciting trip to Quassy Amusement Park, and the day was nothing short of incredible. Quassy, located in Middlebury, Connecticut, offered the perfect setting for a high-energy outing filled with fun, laughter, and meaningful experiences for our students. Planning a trip of this size required detailed coordination, flexibility, and an unwavering commitment from our dedicated staff. We are proud to say that the day was a success from start to finish.
A large group of students and staff traveled together, making this a big off-campus excursion. In advance of the trip, every detail was thoughtfully considered—from travel arrangements and safety plans to accessibility needs and individualized supports. Our team worked closely across departments to prepare sensory-friendly kits, customized visual schedules, and any assistance for students who needed extra help navigating the new environment of the park. Each component of the trip was designed to ensure that every student could fully participate and enjoy the experience in a way that met their unique needs.
As soon as students and staff arrived at the park, the excitement was palpable. Students were eager to explore the rides, games, and attractions, and staff members were right alongside them to provide encouragement, guidance, and plenty of cheers. From gentle rides like the carousel and swings, to more adventurous roller coasters and water slides, there was something for everyone. The park’s manageable size and friendly atmosphere made it especially well-suited for our group, offering just the right balance of stimulation and structure.
One of the most rewarding aspects of the day was watching our students step out of their comfort zones and try new things. For some, it was their first time on a ride that spins or drops. For others, it was the first time waiting in line independently or ordering a snack at a concession stand. These moments, though they may seem small, represent meaningful progress and personal growth for our students. Shrub Oak staff played a critical role in these successes, providing encouragement, adapting plans as needed, and celebrating every achievement along the way.
Staff also carved out quiet moments throughout the day for rest, hydration, and regrouping. Our team is always mindful of the importance of downtime during stimulating outings, and students responded well to these built-in breaks. By offering both structure and choice, Shrub Oak staff helped students regulate, reset, and rejoin the fun with confidence.
Trips like this take a village, and we are incredibly proud of the collaboration and care demonstrated by our entire community. From clinicians and teachers to residential staff and administrators, everyone played a role in making this outing a joyful and inclusive experience.
By the end of the day, students returned to campus tired but happy—smiling, chatting about their favorite rides, and already asking when the next big adventure would be. It was a day of celebration, connection, and courage, and we are so glad students and staff were able to experience it together.
