A Day of Fun and Learning for Shrub Oak International School Students at the Putnam 4-H Fair

We recently had the opportunity to take our students to the annual Putnam 4-H Fair, and the day was filled with excitement, hands-on learning, and memorable experiences. Students were immediately drawn to the wide variety of rides and games, which offered the perfect combination of fun and challenge. Whether spinning on a thrilling carnival ride or testing their skills at classic fair games, our students embraced every opportunity to laugh, compete, and celebrate small victories together.

One of the highlights of the day was exploring the animal exhibits. Students were able to get up close to an array of farm animals. They learned about the animals’ care, diets, and roles on farms, engaging with 4-H members who were eager to share their knowledge. This hands-on experience brought agricultural concepts to life, helping our students connect what they saw to real-world farming practices. Interacting with the animals not only sparked curiosity but also fostered empathy and understanding for living creatures.

The classic car show was another major attraction. Students walked among rows of gleaming vintage vehicles, each with its own history and unique design. They were fascinated to see how automobiles have evolved over the decades, from the craftsmanship of early models to the sleek technology of more recent classics. It was an engaging way to combine history, technology, and artistry into one memorable exhibit.

To make the day even more enriching, students had the chance to step back in time and learn about the rich history of Putnam County. The fair included historical displays and reenactments that showcased the region’s heritage, from early farming tools to artifacts that illustrated daily life in past centuries. Students explored exhibits detailing local industries, traditions, and community life, gaining a deeper appreciation for the area’s cultural roots. This interactive approach to history allowed them to visualize and better understand how the county has grown and changed over time.

Throughout the day, our students not only enjoyed the variety of attractions but also practiced important social, communication, and life skills. They navigated the fairgrounds together, made choices about activities, engaged in conversations with community members, and demonstrated patience while waiting their turn. The trip provided a valuable opportunity for experiential learning outside the classroom, blending education with recreation in a meaningful way.

As the day came to a close, it was clear that the Putnam 4-H Fair had offered something special for everyone. From the excitement of rides and games to the wonder of meeting animals, exploring vintage cars, and connecting with local history, our students left with smiles on their faces and new knowledge in their minds. We look forward to returning in the future to continue building these important connections between learning, community, and fun.
