Shrub Oak students recently attended our local high school’s baseball game so they could experience the thrill of live sports close to home while further developing their social and recreational skills. Attending events like these allows our students to immerse themselves in a vibrant, energetic atmosphere while also practicing and learning skills such as communication, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
The anticipation leading up to the game was palpable as our students prepared for the outing. Some were eager to watch the sport for the first time, while others were longtime baseball fans ready to cheer on the players. Before heading to the field, Shrub Oak staff spent time discussing the rules of the game with students as well as the importance of good sportsmanship—both on and off the field.
As students and staff arrived at the field, the energy in the air was infectious. The sounds of cheering fans, the crack of the bat, and the smell of spring grass created the quintessential baseball experience. Our students quickly took their seats on the bleachers and settled in, watching as the teams took their positions on the field. Throughout the game, our students demonstrated enthusiasm, cheering on the players and reacting to big moments in the game. Some asked insightful questions about strategy, while others simply enjoyed the camaraderie of being together in the stands. The crowd erupted in excitement, and our students joined in the celebration, clapping and cheering alongside Lakeland’s supporters. The experience reinforced the excitement and joy that sports can bring, helping our students connect with others through a shared experience.
Beyond the game itself, the trip served as an opportunity for our students to navigate a community outing with confidence. From purchasing snacks at the concession stand to finding their way around the high school grounds, every aspect of the experience contributed to their independence and self-assurance. These small but meaningful moments help build essential life skills that will serve them well in future social and recreational settings.
Whether it was witnessing an incredible play, chatting with their classmates, or simply enjoying the excitement of the event, each student took something valuable away from the experience. The outing was a reminder of the importance of inclusion, community participation, and the power of sports to bring people together. We look forward to more opportunities like this, where our students can engage, learn, and most importantly, have fun.
