Hands-on cooking activities at Shrub Oak International School often serve a purpose beyond the plate, blending nutrition education, life skills, and plenty of joy. A recent no-bake cookie activity did exactly that, giving students the opportunity to prepare a healthy snack while practicing sequencing, following directions, fine motor skills, and kitchen safety—all without turning on an oven. The recipe itself, lovingly and humorously written by Shrub Oak’s very own fun and funny staff, became part of the experience, keeping the mood light while reinforcing each step of the process.
No-bake recipes are especially well suited for autistic students because they reduce safety risks and allow for immediate results. This activity used simple, recognizable ingredients: bananas, oats, sunflower butter, and maple syrup. Students worked independently with their own bowls, spoons, and plates, promoting autonomy while staff provided guidance and encouragement as needed. From mashing bananas to rolling cookie dough by hand, each step supported sensory exploration and motor planning in a natural, engaging way.
Laughter was built right into the instructions. Directions like “wash your money makers” and reminders to “take a picture for Kara” added personality and warmth, reflecting the supportive relationships between students and staff. These moments of shared humor are an important part of Shrub Oak’s approach, helping students feel comfortable, confident, and motivated to participate. The final step—enjoying the finished cookies—offered a sense of accomplishment and a tangible reward for following the process from start to finish.
Below is the no-bake cookie recipe exactly as it was used during the activity, staff humor and all.
