Shrub Oak International School students took a flavorful journey to Thai Golden, a local restaurant known for its authentic Thai cuisine and warm hospitality. Dining out in a new setting, trying unfamiliar foods, and using traditional utensils such as chopsticks are milestones that represent confidence, independence, and cultural exploration.
At Shrub Oak International School, we believe that every student’s dream—no matter how big or small—is worth pursuing. For some, that dream might be tasting authentic Thai curry for the first time. For others, it could be mastering the art of eating with chopsticks or confidently ordering a favorite dish from a menu in a restaurant. We take pride in helping our students achieve these meaningful goals by providing experiences that support skill-building in real-world environments.
Before the trip, students prepared by learning about Thai cuisine and restaurant etiquette. Our staff discussed the types of food they might encounter, from Pad Thai and spring rolls to mango sticky rice. We practiced how to politely order, communicate with waitstaff, and show appreciation to restaurant employees.
With staff guidance, each student had the opportunity to read the menu, choose a dish, and place an order independently. These moments of autonomy are powerful: they help students strengthen communication, social interaction, and decision-making skills, all within a natural, supportive environment.
As the meal began, students practiced proper dining etiquette, including using chopsticks, sharing dishes, and trying new textures and flavors. For many, it was a moment of pride when they successfully lifted noodles or vegetables with chopsticks for the first time. Staff provided encouragement and gentle instruction, reinforcing patience, coordination, and perseverance. The laughter, conversation, and smiles around the table reflected the joy of accomplishment and the excitement of shared discovery.
Experiential learning opportunities like this one are an essential part of our transdisciplinary approach. By combining social skills development, cultural education, and practical life experience, we create moments that extend far beyond the classroom. Trips like these build confidence, foster independence, and encourage curiosity about the world. They remind our students that their goals are within reach—and that our community is here to support them every step of the way.
For some, this trip fulfilled a long-held wish to eat in a Thai restaurant. For others, it sparked new dreams yet to be realized. At Shrub Oak International School, we are committed to turning those dreams into reality, one experience at a time.
