A Warm Welcome: Shrub Oak International School’s Annual Open House

This year’s Shrub Oak International School Open House brought together families, staff, and students for an afternoon of connection, learning, and community spirit. The event celebrated the collaboration that defines our transdisciplinary approach, offering families an inside look at the individualized, student-centered education we provide every day.

Guests were greeted in the main lobby with refreshments and a warm welcome from faculty and administrators. The atmosphere reflected Shrub Oak International School’s sense of community—friendly, inclusive, and deeply committed to supporting autistic students in achieving their fullest potential. Following the welcome, families gathered in the auditorium for departmental presentations. Each department shared an overview of its programs and highlighted the interdisciplinary teamwork that allows students to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

After the presentations, families participated in guided tours of classrooms, common spaces, and the campus grounds. Groups led families through a personalized route showcasing Shrub Oak’s vibrant learning environments, including classrooms, the cafeteria, and the HUB—Shrub Oak’s central hub for recreation and socialization. Teachers, clinicians, and residential life staff were present throughout the tours to answer questions and describe how therapeutic, academic, and residential programming intersect seamlessly at Shrub Oak International School.

Classroom visits offered parents an opportunity to observe the specialized settings where students learn and grow. From individualized education plans to small group instruction, families saw firsthand how Shrub Oak International School integrates evidence-based practices, assistive technology, and sensory-friendly design into daily instruction. Faculty emphasized how consistent collaboration between teachers, clinicians, and residential life staff ensures that every student’s program is tailored to their unique strengths and needs.

Beyond academics, the Open House also highlighted Shrub Oak’s commitment to experiential learning. Families explored the cafeteria, where students participate in nutrition and life skills lessons, and visited outdoor areas used for recreation and hands-on projects such as farming and gardening. The day concluded with a hayride and recreational activities at the HUB, giving parents a glimpse into the social and leisure experiences that enrich student life at Shrub Oak.

For many families, the event was not only informative but deeply meaningful. It provided a wonderful opportunity to witness the extraordinary progress their children are making and to connect directly with the professionals guiding their development. Staff members expressed pride in showcasing the students’ achievements, while parents shared gratitude for the dedicated support that extends beyond the classroom into every aspect of campus life.

Parents also took a hayride trip around our campus, experiencing a fun, fall tradition while seeing the beautiful expanse of our campus and farm. This was the highlight of the event for many families and students.

The annual Open House serves as a powerful reminder of what makes Shrub Oak International School exceptional: a shared commitment to education, independence, and lifelong growth for autistic individuals. By welcoming families into the heart of the campus, we reaffirm our belief that true learning happens through partnership—between students, families, and the multidisciplinary team devoted to their success.
