A Week of Connection and Celebration at Shrub Oak International School

Shrub Oak International School marked Valentine’s Week with a series of thoughtfully designed activities that emphasized kindness, social connection, creativity, and community engagement across campus. Throughout the week, students participated in hands-on experiences that supported communication skills, relationship-building, and meaningful participation, all within an environment structured to meet their individual learning and social needs.

One of the central activities of the week involved students delivering Valentine’s surprises to peers and staff throughout campus. These deliveries included flowers, sweet treats, and simmer pots created with fruits, spices, and herbs grown on Shrub Oak’s farm. The simmer pots, prepared with guidance from staff, offered students an opportunity to engage in a multi-sensory activity while learning about food preparation, sequencing, and the use of natural ingredients. Delivering these items around campus supported social interaction, functional communication, and confidence, while reinforcing the idea of giving and appreciation.

In addition to these deliveries, a Compliment Wall was created as a shared space for students and staff to write positive messages to one another. The wall quickly became a focal point of the week, filled with notes recognizing kindness, effort, and personal strengths. Writing and reading compliments encouraged expressive language, perspective-taking, and emotional awareness, while also fostering a culture of mutual respect and positivity within the school community.

Creative expression and community service were also key components of Valentine’s Week. Students spent time making Valentine’s Day cards and small arts-and-crafts projects, which they later delivered to local nursing homes. This activity allowed students to practice fine motor skills, follow multi-step directions, and engage in purposeful work tied to real-world outcomes. Delivering the cards extended the impact beyond campus, helping students connect with the broader community and understand the value of generosity and empathy.

A highlight of the week was the annual Valentine’s Dance Party held on Thursday evening in the school gym. The dance provided a structured yet festive social environment where students could enjoy music, movement, and peer interaction. Staff supported students in navigating the event in ways that aligned with their individual comfort levels, whether that meant dancing with friends, observing from the sidelines, or participating for shorter periods of time. Events like the dance reinforced social routines and offered opportunities for students to practice self-regulation and social engagement in a supportive setting.

Collectively, the Valentine’s Week activities reflected Shrub Oak International School’s commitment to creating inclusive, intentional experiences that support both skill development and emotional well-being. By blending creativity, service, and celebration, the week highlighted how everyday moments can be transformed into meaningful learning opportunities, strengthening connections within the school and extending kindness into the surrounding community.
