Shrub Oak International School Students Celebrate Community Spirit at the Yorktown Holiday Parade

Shrub Oak International School recently participated in the annual Yorktown Holiday Parade, an event that brought students, staff, and community members together to celebrate the season in a festive and inclusive atmosphere. The parade, a long-standing local tradition, offered students a meaningful opportunity to engage with the wider community while practicing important social, communication, and life skills consistent with Shrub Oak’s mission. Shrub Oak International School fosters learning environments that extend beyond the classroom through structured activities designed to help autistic students gain confidence, strengthen self-advocacy, and build connections. Community-based experiences such as the holiday parade align with Shrub Oak’s emphasis on authentic learning that supports generalization of skills across settings.

The parade featured brightly lit floats, costumed performers, holiday music, and cheering spectators lining the streets of Yorktown. There was holiday music, treats, and light displays throughout the parade. The parade also strengthened the school’s connection with the surrounding community. Participation in local events reflects Shrub Oak’s commitment to fostering meaningful partnerships and increasing public understanding of autism. These interactions reinforce the value of visibility and inclusion, helping create a more supportive environment for autistic individuals and promoting awareness of the school’s work.

By taking part in the Yorktown Holiday Parade, Shrub Oak International School provided students with an engaging seasonal experience grounded in the school’s core values: respect for individuality, collaboration, and the belief that every student deserves opportunities to learn from the world around them. The parade served not only as a festive outing but also as an extension of Shrub Oak’s educational philosophy—one that prioritizes meaningful experiences, supportive relationships, and growth that extends beyond the campus.
