Shrub Oak International School Students Visit the Croton Fire Station

Shrub Oak students recently had the opportunity to visit the Croton Fire Station, and it was an experience they will remember for a long time. From the moment we arrived, the firefighters greeted us warmly and welcomed us into their station with enthusiasm. For many of our students, it was their very first time stepping inside a firehouse, and the excitement in the air was clear. The chance to not only see but actively participate in learning about firefighting made the day engaging, educational, and fun.

One of the highlights of the visit was getting to climb onto a real fire truck. Our students were able to explore the truck up close, stepping into the driver’s seat, peeking at the equipment compartments, and even sounding the siren. Some of the firefighters kindly and patiently explained how parts of the truck operate. The sheer size of the truck fascinated everyone, and our students were eager to learn how it is used during emergencies. Being able to sit inside such an iconic vehicle gave them a sense of what it feels like to be in the middle of a firefighter’s daily work.

Another unforgettable part of the trip was trying on the firefighters’ gear. Students had the chance to put on a fireman’s jacket, gloves, and even the iconic helmet. The gear was heavier than many expected, which gave them a new appreciation for the physical demands firefighters face every day. Our students posed proudly in the uniform. This experience allowed our students to connect in a sensory and hands-on way, which made the lesson come to life in a meaningful manner.

Perhaps the most important aspect of the visit was meeting the firefighters themselves. Our students asked questions about what it is like to be a real firefighter. The firefighters answered every question with patience and encouragement, creating a welcoming environment where our students felt comfortable and respected. Hearing directly from professionals who dedicate their lives to protecting the community helped our students understand not only the bravery but also the teamwork and discipline required in firefighting.

We also learned about fire safety during the visit. The firefighters explained important tips such as checking smoke detectors, creating a family escape plan, and never playing with matches. These lessons will help them feel more prepared and confident should they ever face an emergency.

The trip to the Croton Fire Station was more than just a field trip; it was an opportunity for our students to connect with the local community and build meaningful relationships. By climbing onto a fire truck, wearing the gear, and meeting real firefighters, our students not only had fun but also gained a deeper understanding of safety, responsibility, and civic duty. We are grateful to the Croton firefighters for opening their doors to us and for inspiring our students with their courage and kindness.
