Seasonal Adventures Bring Holiday Magic for Shrub Oak International School Students

Each winter, Shrub Oak International School organizes a series of seasonal excursions that blend recreation, community engagement, and experiential learning. These outings give our students the opportunity to explore local destinations, practice communication and social skills in authentic settings, and enjoy some of the region’s most beloved holiday traditions.

Students and staff kicked off the season with ice skating at Bear Mountain State Park, a classic Hudson Valley winter activity. The outdoor rink provides an accessible environment where students can experience the sensory rhythm of skating, the feel of crisp, fresh air, and the supportive structure of a winter sport often enjoyed with peers. Staff offered guidance and assistance, helping students build confidence and learn at their own pace. Many students look forward to returning each year, and the open-air setting allows them to participate in a physical activity that is both invigorating and social.

Another highlight of the season is Westchester’s Winter Wonderland at Kensico Dam Plaza, which has become a favorite destination for Shrub Oak students. Featuring festive lights, interactive displays, music, and holiday-themed attractions, the event offers a multisensory environment designed to inspire excitement and curiosity. Students are driven through illuminated trail, taking in large-scale light installations and seasonal scenes that promote language development, visual engagement, and opportunities for spontaneous conversation. For many, the festive environment offers sensory-rich spaces while still maintaining predictability through structured activities and staff guidance.

Many of our students also enjoy train trips to New York City to see the iconic holiday decorations there. Traveling by train helps students practice real-world transportation skills, including reading signs, boarding and exiting safely, and observing expected behaviors in public spaces. Once in the city, students visit landmarks such as Saks Fifth Avenue, Rockefeller Center, and the famous Christmas tree. These trips are exciting and fun for all.

Across all of these outings, Shrub Oak International School remains committed to creating experiences that are joyful, purposeful, and aligned with each student’s goals. The winter trips invite students to participate in the traditions of the season while building independence and communication skills. By integrating recreation with learning, these seasonal adventures help our students connect with their community, broaden their world beyond campus, and create memories that endure well past the holiday season.
