A Day of Play and Community for Shrub Oak International School Founders Students at FDR Park

Students in Shrub Oak International School’s Founders Program recently enjoyed a memorable spring outing to Franklin D. Roosevelt State Park, where they spent the day exploring the playground, connecting with peers, and sharing a festive outdoor barbecue. The trip offered a wonderful blend of recreation, social engagement, and community building in one of the Hudson Valley’s most popular parks.

Located just a short drive from campus, Franklin D. Roosevelt State Park, often referred to as FDR Park, is known for its expansive green spaces, scenic trails, and large playground. The park provided an ideal setting for students to enjoy the fresh air and take part in a variety of activities in a relaxed and supportive environment.

Upon arriving at the park, students made their way to the playground, where they eagerly explored the equipment and engaged in active play. Swings, climbing structures, slides, and interactive features gave students many opportunities to move their bodies and challenge themselves physically. Some students raced to the top of the climbing towers, while others preferred the sensory experience of swinging or the excitement of sliding with friends.

Playgrounds offer more than just fun. They support the development of motor coordination, balance, and strength while also encouraging communication, cooperation, and turn-taking. Throughout the outing, students practiced these skills naturally as they navigated the equipment together, cheered one another on, and celebrated each other’s accomplishments. Staff members were nearby to provide encouragement and support, helping students feel confident as they explored.

After a morning of energetic play, students gathered for a special outdoor barbecue. Picnic tables were set up in a shaded area, creating a welcoming space where everyone could relax and enjoy a meal together. The barbecue featured classic favorites, and students were excited to eat outdoors in the beautiful spring weather.

Sharing meals is an important part of community life at Shrub Oak International School. Dining together helps students strengthen social connections and practice everyday skills such as conversation, making choices, and enjoying new experiences. The barbecue also gave students time to reflect on the morning’s adventures and continue building friendships in a casual and enjoyable setting.

The Founders Program emphasizes meaningful experiences that promote independence, social growth, and personal confidence. Off-campus trips such as this one allow students to practice skills in real-world environments while discovering new interests and making lasting memories.

The visit to FDR Park was filled with laughter, movement, and fresh air fun. From climbing and swinging on the playground to sharing a delicious barbecue under the trees, students enjoyed a day that highlighted the joy of spending time together and experiencing the world beyond campus. Outings like these reflect Shrub Oak International School’s commitment to creating enriching opportunities that support the whole student.
