At Shrub Oak International School, learning extends well beyond the classroom, creating opportunities for students to discover new interests, develop meaningful skills, and build lasting relationships. One of the newest examples of this is our 4-H Club, led by our dedicated farm team, which offers students a welcoming environment where they can explore the natural world while pursuing projects that reflect their individual passions.
Although the club is still in its early stages, it has already become an exciting addition to campus life. Rather than focusing solely on agriculture, the program encourages students to investigate the many ways nature, science, creativity, and community service intersect. The farm provides an ideal setting for this exploration, allowing students to learn through hands-on experiences that foster confidence, independence, and problem-solving.
One of the club’s long-term goals is to complete a public service project during 2026. As students continue to develop ideas together, they are considering several meaningful ways to give back to the community. One possibility involves propagating plants, decorating the pots, and donating them to a local nursing home to brighten residents’ living spaces. Another idea focuses on harvesting surplus produce from the school’s garden and donating it to a nearby farm animal sanctuary that cares for rescued livestock. These discussions provide students with valuable opportunities to think about community needs, environmental stewardship, and how their own efforts can make a positive difference.
In addition to the group service project, students are encouraged to select an individual project based on personal interests. This personalized approach allows students to take ownership of their learning while connecting their hobbies and career aspirations to real-world experiences on the farm.
Some students have already begun bringing their ideas to life. One student is transforming an open garden bed into a butterfly garden designed to attract pollinators and create a beautiful habitat for local wildlife. Another student, who hopes to become a chef, has planted a “pizza garden” filled with ingredients such as basil, tomatoes, and bell peppers that can eventually be harvested and used in homemade recipes. Through planning, planting, and caring for these gardens, students gain practical horticultural skills while seeing the results of their patience and dedication.
Wildlife has also inspired creative learning opportunities. One student has developed a special interest in the crows, ravens, and other birds that regularly visit the farm. As part of this project, the club has been experimenting with designing and building bird feeders, observing which types attract different species, and learning more about the important role birds play in local ecosystems.
Perhaps the most meaningful aspect of the 4-H Club is its emphasis on relationships and exploration. During these first months, the primary focus has been on creating a supportive environment where students feel comfortable trying new activities, asking questions, and discovering what excites them most. The farm offers countless opportunities for curiosity, and students are encouraged to explore at their own pace while receiving guidance and encouragement from caring staff.
As the club continues to grow, so will the opportunities available to students. Whether they are planting gardens, caring for animals, developing service projects, or simply discovering a new interest, members of Shrub Oak’s 4-H Club are building skills that extend far beyond the farm. Through teamwork, creativity, and hands-on learning, they are cultivating not only gardens, but confidence, responsibility, and a deeper connection to their community.
