Gary B. Mesibov, Ph.D.

Dr. Gary B. Mesibov is Professor Emeritus of Psychology in the Departments of Psychiatry and Psychology at the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill. Throughout his 35 year tenure at UNC, he played an integral role on the faculty of the TEACCH Program, serving as Director of TEACCH from 1992 until 2010.  TEACCH (Treatment and Education of Autistic and Related Communication Handicapped Children) is an internationally recognized program for its pioneering approaches to service, treatment, training, research and the education of individuals with autism spectrum disorders.

Dr. Mesibov received his Bachelor’s Degree from Stanford University, MA from University of Michigan, Ph.D. from Brandeis University, and completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  He is a licensed Psychologist in the state of North Carolina.  In recognition of his innovative and seminal work, both clinical and scholarly, Dr. Mesibov has received numerous awards within the United States and internationally, including an Honorary Doctorate from The University of North Hampton (UK), Autism Society of America’s Founders Award, and the Schopler Lifetime Achievement Award (UNC). His editorial appointments include Editor of the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders for 10 years and membership on the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Clinical Child Psychology and the Journal of Pediatric Psychology.
