Shrub Oak International School welcomed the arrival of spring with Spirit Week, a five-day celebration designed to build community, encourage creativity, and foster school spirit among students and staff. From April 27 through May 1, themed activities transformed the campus into a lively environment where participation, self-expression, and connection were at the center of the week’s events. Each day introduced a new theme, allowing students and staff to engage with the community in fun and meaningful ways while reinforcing the supportive, collaborative culture that defines life at Shrub Oak.
Spirit Week began with “Flashback Fever,” also known as Favorite Decade Day. Students and staff arrived on campus dressed in styles inspired by the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, and early 2000s. Bright neon colors, denim jackets, vintage band tees, and other nostalgic fashion choices filled classrooms and hallways. The theme sparked conversations about music, pop culture, and trends from different generations, creating opportunities for learning and social interaction throughout the day. Music from past decades added to the atmosphere during transitions between classes, further immersing the community in the spirit of the theme.
Tuesday’s theme, “Tweedledee & Tweedledum Day,” encouraged students and staff to coordinate outfits with a partner. Twin and matching looks appeared across campus as friends, classmates, and staff members teamed up to participate. The activity promoted teamwork and positive peer interaction, with many students planning their outfits in advance or working together the morning of the event to create coordinated looks. Matching outfits ranged from identical clothing combinations to creative interpretations that reflected the personalities of each pair.
Midweek festivities continued with “Beach Party Day” on Wednesday, bringing a burst of summer energy to campus. Tropical shirts, sunglasses, beach hats, and colorful accessories helped create a relaxed, vacation-inspired atmosphere. The theme encouraged movement and sensory-friendly engagement, with upbeat music and other sensory activities adding to the day’s laid-back vibe. For many students, the bright colors and playful clothing provided another opportunity to express individuality while participating in a shared community event.
Thursday combined costume fun with an interactive campus activity during “Farmer Day & Duck Hunt.” Students and staff embraced farm-inspired fashion, including overalls, flannel shirts, and straw hats, in recognition of Shrub Oak’s strong connection to outdoor and agricultural learning experiences on campus. Throughout the day, students also participated in the Duck Duck Goose Hunt, searching for hidden ducks placed around the school grounds. The activity encouraged exploration, teamwork, and friendly competition as students collected ducks while moving safely through designated areas of campus.
Spirit Week concluded with one of the most anticipated traditions: Pajama Day. On Friday, the school community embraced comfort and relaxation by arriving in cozy pajamas. The low-key theme created a calming atmosphere to wrap up an energetic week, offering time for community-building activities and reflection on the shared experiences that made the celebration memorable.
Throughout the week, prizes were awarded to both students and staff for creativity, effort, participation, and school spirit. These friendly competitions added excitement while reinforcing the week’s larger goal: strengthening connections within the Shrub Oak community. By encouraging enthusiasm, imagination, and collaboration, Spirit Week once again highlighted the vibrant culture that makes Shrub Oak International School a dynamic and supportive place to learn and grow.
