With the arrival of warmer weather, the Shrub Oak International School farm is coming alive with seasonal activities that encourage hands-on learning, creativity, and connection with nature. Throughout the week, students participated in a variety of spring-themed projects that highlighted the rhythms of the farm while providing meaningful opportunities to care for animals, explore gardening, and create nature-inspired crafts.
One of the most exciting activities this week was the creation of wildflower seed bombs. Students worked together to form small balls of soil, clay, and wildflower seeds that can easily be scattered across the landscape. After crafting the seed bombs, students helped spread them around the farm grounds, where they will eventually grow into colorful patches of wildflowers. This activity introduced students to the concept of pollinator-friendly planting and the important role wildflowers play in supporting bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects.
Students also contributed to the farm’s garden spaces by designing and creating new garden signs. These signs will help identify different areas of the garden and the plants growing there, while also giving students a sense of ownership and pride in the farm environment. Decorating and assembling the signs combined creativity with practical purpose, reinforcing the idea that the farm is a shared space where everyone can contribute.
Animal care is a central component of the Shrub Oak farm experience, and students had the opportunity to assist with routine health care for the animals. This week included helping administer dewormer medicine to ensure the animals remain healthy and well cared for. Participating in these responsibilities allows students to learn about animal welfare while building confidence and developing a sense of responsibility.
The farm’s chickens also enjoyed a special outing. A few particularly calm and friendly chickens went on a small “field trip” across campus, visiting students, and spending time near the playground. These chickens are known for being especially comfortable with people and enjoy being gently held. Their visit brought smiles to many faces and provided a unique opportunity for students and staff to interact with the animals in a new setting.
Spring crafts were another highlight of the week. Students created colorful flowers using coffee filters, carefully shaping and decorating them before adding a personal touch by selecting an essential oil scent. Each student chose their favorite fragrance to apply to their flower, resulting in a sensory-rich craft that combined art, creativity, and aromatherapy. The flower-themed activity was designed to build excitement for the many wildflowers that will soon bloom across the farm.
Additional projects kept students engaged throughout the week. Students helped collect fresh eggs from the chicken coop, an activity that reinforces the connection between daily farm care and food production. Others painted acorns, turning simple natural materials into beautiful works of art. Students also assisted with creating bookmarks and continued working on signage for the garden, contributing to several creative and practical initiatives around the farm.
These spring activities reflect the dynamic role the farm plays in campus life at Shrub Oak International School. Through planting, crafting, and caring for animals, students gain hands-on experiences that encourage curiosity, responsibility, and appreciation for the natural world. As the season continues and the newly planted wildflowers begin to grow, the farm will remain a space for learning, exploration, and connection.
