This summer, Shrub Oak International School’s annual Diploma Camp once again gave students the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors, spend time together, and make the most of the summer. Every other Friday throughout the summer, Diploma students traveled to Lake Mohegan for an afternoon of fishing, swimming, relaxation, and a BBQ lunch. The recurring outings have become a special summer tradition at Shrub Oak International School, giving students a chance to step away from their regular routines and enjoy time together in a relaxed setting.
The final Diploma Camp of the summer took place this past Friday, bringing the season of lake outings to a memorable close. With temperatures climbing, the lake provided a welcome way for students to cool off and enjoy the afternoon. Students took full advantage of the water, including showing off their dock-jumping skills and spending time swimming and playing together.
While Diploma students have been the heart of the summer tradition, this final outing also included a couple of students from other non-Diploma classes. Their participation added to the inclusive and social atmosphere of the afternoon, as students across programs had the opportunity to share in an activity that has become a favorite part of the summer.
Throughout the summer, each trip offered its own combination of activities. Students could fish from the shore, enjoy a BBQ lunch, relax by the lake, or simply spend time with friends and classmates. These outings provided opportunities for students to practice social skills, make choices about how they wanted to spend their time, and participate in a familiar community activity in a different setting.
The informal nature of Diploma Camp also allowed students and staff to enjoy one another’s company outside the classroom. After a busy school year, summer activities such as these provide valuable opportunities for students to connect with peers and staff while enjoying recreation and the natural environment.
The final Friday at the lake was especially fitting for a tradition centered on summer fun. Although the day was hot, students embraced the weather and made the most of their afternoon in and around the water. The laughter, encouragement, shared meals, and friendly camaraderie reflected what has made Diploma Camp such a meaningful part of the Shrub Oak summer.
As the final outing came to an end, students returned to campus with fond memories of Fridays at the lake to carry with them. From fishing and BBQ lunches to dock jumping and swimming, this year’s Diploma Camp provided plenty of opportunities for recreation, connection, and community. Shrub Oak International School is proud to continue this annual tradition and looks forward to returning to the lake next summer.
