Each summer, Shrub Oak International School hosts a special lacrosse camp that gives students the opportunity to learn new skills, stay active, and connect with visiting student-athletes from the surrounding community. The annual camp has become a highly anticipated tradition on campus, offering an engaging and supportive introduction to one of the fastest-growing sports in the country.
A unique aspect of the program is that a lacrosse team visits Shrub Oak throughout the summer to lead the camp. These student-athletes volunteer their time to teach the fundamentals of the game, including passing, catching, cradling, shooting, and teamwork. Their enthusiasm and encouragement help create a welcoming environment where Shrub Oak students can participate at their own pace and experience the excitement of the sport.
This year, Shrub Oak is delighted to welcome the New Fairfield High School Girls Lacrosse Team to campus. The team works directly with students, demonstrating techniques, leading drills, and cheering on every participant. Their patience, kindness, and positive energy makes the lacrosse camp a memorable experience for everyone involved.
Students have the opportunity to practice with lacrosse sticks, move through skill stations, and build confidence as they learn the basics of the game. For some students, this is their first exposure to lacrosse. For others, it is a chance to continue developing skills they had learned during previous summers. Regardless of prior experience, every student is encouraged to participate in ways that feel comfortable and meaningful to them.
At Shrub Oak International School, experiential learning opportunities such as this reflect the school’s transdisciplinary approach, which integrates education, clinical support, and residential life to help students generalize skills across settings. Physical activities like lacrosse provide far more than exercise. They promote communication, motor planning, social interaction, emotional regulation, and perseverance.
Sports can be particularly beneficial for autistic students because they offer structured routines, clear expectations, and opportunities to practice collaboration. Students work on following directions, waiting their turn, and celebrating achievements with peers. These shared experiences foster confidence and create a sense of belonging.
The success of the lacrosse camp is also made possible by Shrub Oak staff members, who assist students throughout the activities. Staff provide encouragement, model participation, and offer individualized support to ensure each student can engage fully. Their presence helps students feel secure and motivated as they try new skills and challenge themselves.
The annual lacrosse camp is an example of how partnerships with local schools and organizations enrich the student experience at Shrub Oak. By connecting students with dedicated athletes and mentors, the program introduces new interests while reinforcing important life skills.
Shrub Oak International School extends its sincere thanks to the New Fairfield Girls Lacrosse Team for sharing their time and talents, and to the staff members whose support makes the camp such a success. Together, they created an unforgettable experience filled with teamwork, learning, and fun.
