Students at Shrub Oak International School recently enjoyed an exciting day of recreation, exploration, and community engagement during a trip to The Castle Fun Center in Chester, New York. With a wide variety of attractions and outdoor activities available, the outing provided students with an opportunity to celebrate the arrival of summer while building friendships, practicing social skills, and creating lasting memories.
Nestled in the Hudson Valley, The Castle Fun Center offers an impressive selection of attractions designed for visitors of all ages. During their visit, students explored many of the park’s outdoor features, taking advantage of the warm weather and energetic atmosphere. From racing around the go-kart track to enjoying the park’s outdoor rides, students spent the day immersed in fun and adventure. The facility’s attractions include go-karts, miniature golf, a zip line, a swing ride, the Dragon Coaster, Free Fall, and other seasonal outdoor experiences that encourage movement, exploration, and friendly competition.
One of the highlights of the trip was the opportunity for students to challenge themselves by trying new activities. Some students eagerly climbed aboard rides, while others enjoyed testing their driving skills on the go-kart track or navigating the miniature golf course. The variety of attractions allowed students to choose activities that matched their interests and comfort levels, ensuring that everyone could participate in a meaningful way.
Throughout the day, students demonstrated flexibility, independence, and confidence as they explored the park. Outings like this provide valuable opportunities to practice real-world skills in a supportive environment. Whether purchasing snacks, waiting in line for attractions, making decisions about which activities to try, or interacting with peers and community members, students were able to apply communication and self-advocacy skills outside of the classroom.
The trip also served as an opportunity for students to strengthen social connections. Friends cheered one another on during races, celebrated successful shots on the mini-golf course, and shared plenty of laughter throughout the day. Staff members accompanied students as they explored the park, helping to foster a positive and inclusive atmosphere where everyone could enjoy the experience together.
Community-based outings are an important component of Shrub Oak International School’s transdisciplinary approach. Experiences beyond campus allow students to practice skills in authentic settings while encouraging personal growth, independence, and confidence. Recreational trips also provide opportunities for students to discover new interests and engage in activities that support wellness, leisure, and quality of life.
As the day came to a close, students returned to campus with smiles, stories, and plenty of favorite moments to share. The trip to The Castle Fun Center combined excitement, adventure, and meaningful learning opportunities in a way that perfectly captured the spirit of summer. From go-karts and miniature golf to thrilling rides and time spent with friends, the outing was a memorable experience that highlighted the joy of learning, growing, and having fun together.
